A documented collector's rarity from the twilight era of American guitar manufacturing in Chicago, this 1969 Kay 392 Vanguard II represents the fascinating transitional period when Valco merged operations across the Kay and Supro workshops. Following Valco’s consolidation of the two brands in 1968, shop builders combined Supro construction methods, body contours, and hardware concepts directly into the traditional Kay Vanguard platform. This unique production run was cut short when Valco was liquidated in October 1969, leaving few surviving examples of the 392 model in existence today.
Built around a comfortable 25" scale length, this Vanguard II delivers thick, resonant mid-century Chicago electric tone with authentic chime and harmonic breakup. The neck profile feels substantial yet fast, offering excellent access across the entire fingerboard.
This instrument is in very good, fully playable vintage condition. The electronics, controls, and pickups are functional and responsive. The bridge and tremolo arm have been replaced with modern functional assemblies to keep the guitar gig-ready and properly intonated, while the body and neck retain their authentic vintage finish, patina, and checking. The guitar comes complete with a period-correct protective vintage case.
